New Ceremony

— Thinking About Life and Death from a Housing Complex

New Ceremony, a project by Kenta Ishige and Ikumi Yang, explores what a “ceremony” might mean in contemporary society through the setting of a large-scale housing complex.

Originally built as a symbol of a new way of life, housing complexes such as Tokiwadaira have undergone significant demographic and social changes, including an aging population, increasing cultural diversity, and transformations in family and community structures. Funerary rituals have historically been shaped by religion, family, and local communities. Yet today, as people with different beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and forms of belonging live alongside one another, it is no longer self-evident who mourns whom, or what constitutes a shared ritual.

Rather than reconstructing or reproducing an existing religious or traditional form, the project develops provisional ceremonies through dialogue with residents and participants, embodied games, fieldwork, and collective simulations. Participants with differing ideas about death temporarily gather in the same space and negotiate gestures, words, distances, and roles. This process of negotiation itself becomes a form of performance.

New Ceremony does not seek to restore a lost sense of community. Instead, it asks whether a ritual can be created among people who do not share the same ancestors, faith, or values. What kinds of bodies, gestures, and forms are necessary for an experience as personal as death to become, even temporarily, something that can be held in common? Starting from the concrete social and spatial conditions of the housing complex, the project repeatedly puts these questions into practice.

石毛健太＋楊いくみによる「ニューセレモニー」は、団地を舞台に、現代における「儀礼」のあり方を考えるプロジェクトである。

かつて新しい生活様式の象徴としてつくられた団地では、現在、高齢化や住民の多国籍化、家族や地域の関係の変化などによって、人が生まれ、暮らし、死を迎えるまでを支えてきた共同体のあり方も変化している。とりわけ葬儀は、宗教、家族、地域といった既存の関係によって形づくられてきた一方、それらを共有しない人々が同じ場所で暮らす現在、誰が誰を弔い、何をもってひとつの「儀礼」とするのかは自明ではない。

本プロジェクトでは、特定の伝統や宗教的形式を再現するのではなく、住民や参加者との対話、身体を用いたゲーム、フィールドワークやシミュレーションを通して、まだ存在しないセレモニーの形式を仮設していく。そこでは、死について異なる考えを持つ人々が一時的に同じ場に集まり、動作や言葉、距離、役割を交渉すること自体がひとつのパフォーマンスとなる。

「ニューセレモニー」が試みるのは、失われた共同体を回復することではない。共通の祖先や信仰、価値観を持たない者同士のあいだに、それでも儀礼はつくることができるのか。そして、個人的な出来事である「死」を、一時的に他者と共有するためには、どのような身体と形式が必要なのか。本プロジェクトは、団地という具体的な生活空間から、その問いを繰り返し実践している。
